Embarking on the Journey

When I initially embarked on my journey of self-discovery, I didn’t realize it would be a lifelong endeavor. I wasn’t very clear on what it would look like but I did have a vague expectation that I would find who I was and the hard part would be over. What I realize now, four and a half years later is that it’s a life-long journey. Every day is an adventure of getting to know myself better. It’s a practice of accepting and embracing who I am, exploring who I want to be, and living in alignment with my true self.

I set out on the adventure of self-discovery out of sheer desperation. I found myself depressed, unsatisfied, and lost in life. I thought I didn’t want to live anymore. What I didn’t realize is I didn’t want to live a life without purpose anymore. It took me facing the possibility of losing my life to realize how desperately I wanted to live it. As scary as embarking on the journey of self-discovery may seem to some, the prospect of living a life without discovering my purpose was even scarier to me.

The very idea of discovering who I was and what I was meant to do gave me a sense of purpose. For two years, I journaled, evaluated, and reflected on my life. I faced uncomfortable situations. I had to accept responsibility and be accountable in ways I’d never done before. I voiced truths that were hard to admit. It was downright painful at times. The thing is, I knew it was part of the process. I was willing to go through that temporary discomfort in order to heal from past, discover where I lost my sense of self, and reconnect with who I was.

I have to say, the hardest part for me was taking the first step. There’ve been potholes on the road along the way but none that I wasn’t able to patch up nor that made me decide to abandon the journey I’d set out on. I’ve reconnected with my sense of self and learned some incredible lessons along the way. As wonderful as it is for me, I realize that the part of the point is for the journey to benefit others as well. This has served me as life experience to guide and support other women who set out on the journey of self-discovery.

If you’re contemplating embarking on this journey for yourself, I encourage you to do it. While it can be scary, the hardest part is making the jump! Once you land, you’ll hit the ground and find your footing. Be open to the journey as it unfolds in front of you. Look out for the signs in unexpected places along the way. Bring a child-like sense of wonder and curiosity with you because it will go a long way. Life takes on a whole new meaning when you know who you are and make choices that are in alignment with your authentic self.

Sending you lots of love and wishing you all that you need to support you wherever you’re at on your journey of self-discovery.
